NYC Half Marathon 2010 is welcoming the master marathoner Haile Gebrselassie. He is one of the fastest men in the world, if not the fastest in long distance racing. Last time Haile raced in the US, he ran the 2007 NYC Half Marathon in 59 minutes, 24 seconds. He ran 13.1 miles under one hour!!!!! That's just incredible, ridiculously fast, I can't fathom those splits. Anyone who has ran 13 miles knows that shit is hard as hell and this guy did it in under an hour. Mind blowing. One of this top competitors is 2009 New York City Marathon winner Meb Keflezighi. I am for sure watching this one because it will be a nail biter. May the best man win. March 21st, 2010. Watch it on ABC!

good news (for me at least)! i am almost healed! started running this week a few miles at a time and im not limping yea! my piriformis is stretched all the time now and it feels awesome. feeling positive about building my base back through this winter to have a strong start to spring. put all that winter gear to use!

boston 2010 - ryan & meb!

Big announcement in marathon running this week - Meb and Ryan are both running Boston Marathon in April 2010. They train together in Mammoth Lakes California under the same coach and now will compete for first place. During NYC Marathon, everyone's eyes were on Ryan to win, but Meb stole the show. Ryan's post NYC comments were that Meb deserved his victory and he was happy to see him win over anyone else. Both of these men have great attitudes about competition and you can tell they train really hard to be where they are today. Meb recovered for two years to make for a very sweet victory this past November. I am impressed by those who train together and race together. Every man for himself at the end of the day.
Where's my girl Kara?? The American ladies need to step up their game! Kara had a huge debut last year, but this year has been quiet for our women. Wonder what her coach Alberto Salazar is planning for her.... There will be some excitement in U.S. marathon running in 2010. I can feel it!

piriformis syndrome

Three weeks after a marathon and I still have a pain in my ass. It's quite mild now, almost non existent, but there is a tightness deep in the left side of glute/hip area that has caused many tears, loss of muscle tone (that I worked so hard for), many mood swings, and failed attempts to try and jog/limp (a very sad sight). Anyway I feel positive now that I think its almost over and yesterday I was able to run almost like a normal person again. Piriformis muscle thanks for messing my left side up so bad! I am going to attack you with a foam roller now and keep stretching you out. Good for nothing pain in the ass!

The important lesson learned in the past 3 weeks...stretch bitch! Stretch more than ever because those tight hips got you nowhere. Stretch at work, stretch in class, stretch in bed, stretch like you've never stretched before. All the time! Especially the hips. Sit in that pigeon pose for as long as possible, and then do it again. The best thing that has come out of these past 3 weeks is a routine full of core and hip/glute exercises for stability and strengthening. Since it's now a routine and I actually enjoy it, I will continue doing these exercise since I neglected it during marathon training.

The injury is almost over (I hope). Now time to stop obsessing over my injury and study for finals. Then workout later because that's more fun.

I feel so inspired and an awe of the 42,000 (approximately) athletes that ran in the ING NYC Marathon this past Sunday Nov. 1st. I cheered, yelled, screamed out people's names, jumped up and down, rang a cow bell like a mad woman, and then to top it all off jumped in with my coach in Harlem at mile 21.5. Had to get out when there was 200 meters to go. It was absolutely amazing to see some of the best athletes in this world and to run with the man who has helped me run from day one. Amazing!!!!!! I really hope to run NYC in 2010. I should be in......

How terrible, it's been 2 weeks since I've blogged.... Been so busy with school, work, marathon training, sleeping, and eating, that my lovely little blog that only I read is being neglected. I will put this to an end soon! New posts coming up in November. The NYC marathon is this Sunday, November 1st and I'm super excited! This is a big one. Shout out to William and Oscar - running with you both as much as I can. The head women racing are Paula Radcliffe, fellow Russians Ludmilla and Tatyana Petrova, Salina Kosgei and other lovely ladies. Can Paula win again?! Where is my hero Kara Goucher??? I was hoping for a come back from her to push Paula to the finish line. Guess not. The men have an all star roster of Martin Lel, Ramala, Gomes dos Santos, Ryan Hall, Paul Tergat! Big line up! Crazy! I cannot wait. I've loved NYC marathon even when I was young and watched it on tv and never ran a second of my life, I found it exciting and amazing that people can run so much and so fast for so long. Imagine the enthusiasm now that I'm three weeks away from my first marathon!

Anyway, it's fall and I am embracing it with a hoodie, cycling gloves, running gloves and shorts and long sleeves.... good times. Lots of green tea and zinc my friends. Don't forget to wash your hands (flu season) and check back soon!

Today was beautiful. I ran my best half marathon today in Staten Island (it's a good course), my parents saw me, it was sweet. Now about the elite athletes....

Chicago marathon was today and Sammy Wanjiru, the Kenyan 22 year old Olympic 2008 gold winner broke a course record with a time of 2:05:41. Haile watch out!

Russians Liliya Shobukhova came in first with 2:25:56 and Lidiya Grigoryeva came in third with 2:26:47. Go Russians!

The World Half Marathon Championships were in Birmingham, UK and Tadese set a record with his fourth consecutive win and American Dathan Ritzenhein came in third place.

Yesterday's amazing Ironman at Kona, Hawaii had champions Craig Alexander Chrissie Wellington as the winners, again.

While the rest of the world watches football and baseball, this is what inspires me.

Good article by Robert Sullivan on the bike vs. pedestrian battle on the Brooklyn Bridge.

I think all New Yorkers (Brooklynites) who use the Brooklyn Bridge have a lot to deal with. This bridge is the most beautiful, iconic, and heavily crowded bridge in NYC. The thought of riding on it anytime between 7am and 11pm makes me cringe. All the people you have to deal with and the narrow lane is just not fun. I run over this bridge a lot and even that makes me aggressive as I dodge tourists who somehow cannot see all the runners and cyclists who are just trying to get from point A to B. Hopefully if they ban bikes they will allow a bike lane with the cars below. Runners can just keep swinging those elbows. Tourists watch out!

Yes I am a little blue and stare at other people riding wishing I could get on my bike without the danger of faulty steering. However, I am finding inspiration in other places. First and foremost, I am still training for a marathon and enjoying the process. So I was really happy to find this article about how elite Kenyan runners eat. Someone had to research this finally! My beloved track frame is cracked and she is no longer usable (well for a few days until it becomes dangerous). Felt much sadness among all of the other happiness and beauty of the day. Beautiful lugged steel track frame, delicate, yet strong, and precious. You gave me lots of joy. This is life... all good things must come to an end.

SF bike adventures!

Bike adventures included hills, riding to San Mateo (about 25 miles with Nic and his boys), taking the bikes back on Caltrain (bikes and beer all for $4.25 one way), riding against the wind, up more hills, down hills, and all around town. Now I just have to wait for my bike to return to me via UPS (fingers crossed)!

Abel Kirui won the 12th IAAF World Championships today in the marathon! The Kenyan who is friends with fastest marathoner Haile Gebrselassie won with a time of 2:06:54 which set a new record! Amazing.

The NYC Half Marathon was a super exciting race and a very enjoyable experience. Paula Radcliffe came in first among the women! She was 2 seconds short of breaking the course record for women, maybe she was holding back for the World Championships next week. Hopefully today's performance will confirm that she will compete in Berlin. It was a hot, humid, crowded race , but it was fun. Running through Times Square with all the people cheering and musicians playing really helped get some adrenaline when your legs start to feel like lead. Too bad my foot started to really hurt around mile 8 but I made it after many fluid station breaks. The highlight was watching the awards ceremony after the race and being 15 feet away from the top runners in the world. Quite the inspiration! No excuses the real training will now begin! Come on LunarGlides (see previous post on new sneakers).

Italy has a rich history of cycling and frame building and my next fantasy frame is Italian (Colnago or Ciocc) so I am feeling all things Italian. It's enough that I keep posting Cinelli links, but now I discovered an Italian blog... www.milanofixed.com.
Even though I cannot understand anything, it looks pretty awesome and full of bike smut so I like it. I am sure the boys will like it even more. Gives me an idea to get naked guys to straddle bikes. Where's the bike porn for girls? Anyway, maybe I should move to Italy, I'd probably be more popular out there and a better rider. Ha!

Big news for us runners in NYC! Paula Radcliffe, the legendary British runner will be in this Sunday's NYC Half Marathon. It's her tune up race for the World Championships in Berlin next week where my girl Kara Goucher will also be competing. For those who don't know, Paula Radcliffe has won the NYC Marathon 3 times! Last night I had the pleasure of reliving last summer by watching some of the track and field events from the 2008 Olympics with a friend who has cable. Ever since I was a little kid I was always glued to the TV when the Olympics were on. Yes Usain Bolt, Dara Torres, and Michael Phelps dominated, but every athlete in every sport exhibited the passion, determination, focus, excitement, and nerves they were experiencing. You can feel the emotion for them through the TV! Well at least I can. I am thankful for these world class athletes who train consistently and go against the odds to show all of us what we are capable of. Even a year later, it was like watching Usain Bolt break the world record for the first time. I am grateful for the endless inspiration from those who keep doing what they love no matter how difficult it might be.

Time to play in traffic but without actual traffic! One of my favorite developments in NYC is the increased bike awareness (I love bike lanes). Summer streets started last year and it gives anyone and everyone the freedom of car-free fun in the city. We have three Saturdays this August (8/8, 8/15, 8/22) to ride, run, skate, rollerblade, skip, jump rope down Park Avenue from Central Park to the Brooklyn Bridge without a car in sight. Get off your ass and go play outside!

I had the pleasure of meeting some fine gentlemen from SF and LA while they were visiting NYC. We hung out in Brooklyn and the city, bonded over bikes, even ventured on a 75 mile ride to Long Beach on a Sunday morning. Nic, John, Noah, Damon, CJ, and their crew of riders took on the amazing journey of riding from Tokyo to Osaka. John filmed the 350 mile ride through Japan on track bikes in a matter of one week and everything that happened in between the riding. Check the Tokyo to Osaka site. Support the tremendous cause and effort by these bike enthusiasts. Cannot wait for the film release!

Kara Goucher is one of the best runners right now. She went from racing shorter distances to making her mark in 3rd place in the first two marathons she ran - NYC and Boston. This past weekend she smashed the men and women and came in first place at Rock 'N Roll Chicago Half Marathon. Check the story and photos!

Give credit where credit is due. She is making sports history and will break records. Good luck in the World Championships Kara!

Besides riding, my second love is running. Therefore, I am hoping these fantastic looking sneakers help me in my mission of becoming a fitter, faster, runner without shin splints. Or maybe I will look a little cooler. Stability shoes are often very bulky and unattractive. These are supposed to adjust to your run as you keep going so they are ideal for distance. Will purchase these soon and report back on my findings.

New handlebars are currently on order. No more risers. They are supposedly safer, but I don't buy it. I have almost gotten hit many times on the risers. I don't think that the shape of your handlebars will make it that much safer in the city with all of the cab drivers, jerks driving into bike lanes while talking on their cell phones, and noodle legged riders going the wrong way. The blue Nitto risers are a little bad ass, but I prefer the simplicity and classic shape of drop handlebars. As of this weekend, Matsuri should be complete with her shiny new Nitto drops and I will celebrate by riding in circles in Prospect Park. Yes that's what I do.

Decided to start a blog for my many rambling thoughts involving bicycles. The wheels turn more and more as I ride. Many of my most prolific and genius revelations have occurred while riding. And when I am not riding, I am thinking about my bike, or future bike build, or the next run. Also think about food and boys sometimes.
